Wally’s Burgers Review

Yesterday, Stephen gave me a call after his workout and needed a boost in calories. I did as any good friend would and volunteered my companionship as he replenished his fat count and make another food review. After our experience with the wonderful Hulk burger, we decided to try out an old local burger joint. Wally’s Burgers is located on Kingsway in Vancouver and has been around for decades, it used to be one of those old drive-in diners. I’ve heard a lot about their burgers but have never tried it.

We arrived with empty stomachs (I had not eaten all day) and looked for the biggest burger possible, that would be their Deluxe Wagon. It consists of 2 beef patties, lettuce, tomato, special sauce and nestled in a big bun. We each ordered a side of onion scoops and jalapeno caps. I also had a strawberry milkshake and Stephen had a root beer. The total was around $16, $8 per person, with the burger only costing us $4.05 each!

The Deluxe Wagon>imgp3871.JPGimgp3861.JPG<The Hulk

To be honest, I wasn’t very impressed with the way my burger looked. It wasn’t as big or attractive as the hulk burger and despite having two patties, they were very thin. You can see Stephen above comparing the Wagon to the Hulk.

As for taste, I was also disappointed. Don’t get me wrong now, it was a good burger, but just not on the level that I had expected it to be. The patties tasted like a flame-broiled patty at Burger King and the patty didn’t taste fresh. The cheese was sliced processed cheese, not the real stuff. There were also no onions or pickles. On the high side, my pink milkshake was delicious and made Stephen wish he got one. The onion scoops and jalapeno caps were very tasty and a unique take on the usual onion rings and jalapeno poppers. When we finished and sat around judging our experience, Stephen noticed that we could have added a fried egg and hot dog (80 cents each) onto our deluxe wagon to make the comparison with the Hulk more levelled. Well why the hell not give it a try I say, I’ve got room!

p1010027.JPGp1010024.JPGp1010028.JPGimgp3873.JPG

Now this was more like it! We were more impressed with the size and appearance of this new, improved Wagon. They also put more special sauce in it this time because Stephen didn’t taste it in our first burger. Unfortunately, it kinda failed the taste test again. I couldn’t really taste the fried egg and the hot dog was one of those cheap processed meat dogs they serve grade school kids who don’t know any better. Quite honestly it became a task for me to shove it down my throat, if I didn’t hate waste so much I would have just chucked it. It just doesn’t compare to the Hulk at Knight & Day. The Hulk tasted like the patty was freshly hand made, the sausage was a TRUE Bavarian sausage, the cheese was real (although Stephen believes if it wasn’t cut off a wheel it’s not real cheese) and the ingredients seemed to be much fresher. The Wally Wagon was just too much of a regular fast-food quality burger. I guess you get what you pay for. Although Wally’s would not be my first choice of burger, I guess I would go there over McDonald’s.

Ahhhh…the old grease bucket. I have really great memories as a kid getting sundaes from there and then going to Norquay park. Wally’s is a total landmark.

Ya know for the life of me I could not talk “that guy whose name I can’t mention on the internet” into going to grab one of these last night.
Something about heart attacks and maybe some future erectile dysfunction just begging to be had.
Ok maybe the last part was all in my head.
I would cry for sure…

Here you go again with more descriptions and pictures of food. While I agree that the Hulk just looks better than this, it still doesn’t look too bad.

Did you explain to them why you wanted the 2nd burger with the egg and hot dog?

They didn’t question the egg and hot dog? I have to admit that those are two things I don’t think I ever would have thought to add to a burger. I grilled up some burgers tonight for dinner, I should have tried to make my own Hulk burger.

The egg and hot dog were additions on the menu already, so they didn’t even bat an eyelash when Stephen and I ordered them. Us east Asians can eat, why do you think most of those eating contest winners are little, skinny Asians?

Are the eggs and hotdogs on a burger a Canadian thing? Honestly, I had never heard of that before but I have to admit it sounds good.

Man, that Kobayashi can flat out eat.

Actually melted cheddar cheese on apple pie and Canadian Bacon (ham) are Canadian things. The eggs and hot dogs I’m not sure of where it came from, but someone was saying it’s common to have fried eggs on their burgers in Australia too.

I’d have to say its an Aussie thing. They have places that serve these all over Australia. It’s just weird to see it here, but it’s so good.

While travelling in Spain 5 years ago I decided to stop by this burger joint in San Sebastian and order a burger. Order a burger in Spain??? With all the food they have??? Well let me tell you this. The burger was damn good and huge like the hulk burger and it came with an egg. YES, an egg. Now I thought that was strange until I got to another town and another town and then another and guess what!!!! Those Spaniards love their eggs on their burgers because everywhere I went there it was “hamburguesa con huevos”.

You have to understand I don’t just merely like eating, I have a true love and passion for food and I excel at the art of eating. I get so happy when I eat something delicious it almost brings tears to my eyes.

[…] Wally’s (officially known as Wally’s Drive In) is probably one of the most broke ass looking places to ever flip a burger, but I’m sure that during the days of the drive in eatery, it was one of the kings.  Afterall, it’s survived for eons.  I always drive past it without a single glance, but today I would be making a stop there.  Driving back from the gym and looking for extra calories, I called up Leo who was more than happy to accompany me. Leo is always hungry. […]

That’s looks and tastes good. :) Too bad the only common fastfood that we have in our local context is mcdonalds, KFC, Burger King etc. I wish for more good food!
