UFC 77: Hostile Territory – Recap

Once again the lightweights show the heavyweights how it’s done in the UFC.

The most entertaining fights were from the little guys who were hungry enough to give us a show. The heavyweight bout between Tim Sylvia and Brandon Vera was a bore. Most of the fight they just clinched and whispered sweet nothings. They should start taking points away from fighters who don’t fight. Sylvia wins a decision. I guess somebody had to win. I won’t be sad to see Sylvia just disappear into obscurity.

At least my steaks were exciting!

The most amazing fight of the night was between Alvin Robinson and Jorge Gurgel. The first round was an impressive display of technical prowess, real high-end jujitsu here. Gurgel appeared to have won the first round point-wise but soon ran out of gas as Robinson decided to do some complex face rearranging. By the end of the third round Gurgel’s face was so swelled from all the punches and hammer strikes that he looked like a bobble head on someone’s dashboard. At the end of the second he was so dazed he didn’t know where his corner was and had to be escorted to his seat. To give Gurgel credit, he took the beatings relatively well and did not capitulate. I think he managed to escape without breaking his nose too.

The main event, the championship middleweight title, between Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin was heavily one-sided. Silva was just all over Franklin like a fat kid on a pack of Smarties. Franklin was constantly on the defense and was knocked down right at the end of the first round. Saved by the bell for sure as Franklin just buckled. The second round was not much better for Franklin. Silva was just too fast, fancily dodging all the strike attempts. Silva earns his moniker “The Spider” well, his arms and legs were everywhere. Franklin was beat down again in the second round and the referee stopped the fight. Silva wins by TKO. This Silva is going to be a Hall of Famer if he keeps this up.

I wanted to watch the Jason Macdonald versus Yushin Okami bout, but unfortunately it was not broadcast. Sorry to hear that Canadian Macdonald was defeated but Okami is a solid fighter who is making his way up the middleweight ladder.

We show all the pay-per-views at bar I work at. We get such a massive crowd, it’s always a great time. I just wish we served steak. =(

Thanks for the recap of the fights! The steaks look great too.

Do you think this is the end of the line for Franklin? Is he going to try and get back on the comeback trail again after having it handed to him a 2nd time?

Hard to say, I think he’s got a little life left in him as he won the fight prior to this one against Okami. I give fighters the three strike rule, lose three straight in a row and you’re out.

They were great! I bought some nice beef rib steaks with great marbling, then I had then marinating for a few hours before putting on the grill. The really light colored one on the bottom was not mine, a buddy just threw on of his own steaks on the grill so I cooked it for him.

I agree, I’m not much in to the Ultimate Fighting, but those steaks sure look tasty.

Great post, Leo. I don’t think Silva will be beat anytime soon. He is an amazing fighter.
Cheers!
