Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has the dubious honor of being the first North American airport to implement a new “backscatter” x-ray machine that can scan through clothes and also see the contours of the body. Officials state that the contrast has been scaled back to only portray an image resembling a line drawing.
Also, to maintain integrity with this controversial system, male guards will screen men and female guards will screen women. No images will be stored in the machine. People who are suspect will be properly searched via a pat down or strip search as warranted.
Critics of this technology state that scaling back the detail will make the images useless and too much detail is an invasion of privacy.
