Hump Day Video: June 27th, 2007

Welcome to another Hump Day Video! Today is a double feature :)

I wanted to share with you all a little peek into my world of close combat. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve practiced martial arts since I was a kid, with my original discipline being Taekwondo. Growing up as a lone Chinese kid in an Italian neighborhood meant me being on the receiving end of many a bully, but I always fought back. I took my share of lumps :(

Realizing that stylish forms and katas of traditional martial arts just wasn’t effective in the street, I started experimenting by combining various forms of martial arts to suit the type of combat I was involved in (i.e., Taekwondo kicks for stand-up distance, Muay Thai for close combat, Judo for take-downs and groundwork and some military stuff my dad taught me). Over time, with practice, I learned to effectively combine these art forms for practical street defense. I do mean defense, as I was quite often outnumbered, my goal was to engage and strike quickly, thus creating an opportunity for me to disengage myself from a bad situation. Who would have thought that what I was doing was a basic foundation for what we now know as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting?

I’ve been a bouncer at various clubs for 10 years now and a loss prevention officer for 7 years, my MMA skills and subsequent tactical/submission/handcuff training have gotten me out of many a sticky situation with minimal injuries to myself. If only there was a course on how to avoid flying bottles ;)

Don’t get me wrong, physical violence is (mostly) used only as the last form of defense and “verbal judo” can get you out of most fights. Hostility breeds hostility.

Bas Rutten is one of my favorite characters, and I mean character, he’s just a tough SOB with a great sense of humor. Here he is sharing with us some practical maneuvers for when your just DONE with the talking. He makes ass-kicking hilarious. Enjoy!

Bas Rutten is just so entertaining to watch! There’s a lot of good instructors out there but it’s great to see one who adds his own kind of rough humor to his lessons.

Bas is a fighter with true street origins, not one of those new breed of MMA guys who have never been in a real, no-rules fight out of the octagon.

My youngest son is absolutely hooked on MMA (national fighting as he calls it) and always wants to fight me as soon as I get home from work. We need to get him into some classes as I think he would love it. Earlier today he was chasing around a 6th grader from down the street that wouldn’t give his football back, he was trying to bust this kid upside the head and was swinging for the fences before my wife could grab him (he is 5 years old).

5 is already too old. By the age of 4 my dad had me wrestling the neighbor’s dogs.
A 6th grader taking a football from a kid in kindergarten? Get your kid a Glock ;)
