In my birthplace of Taiwan (ROC), 2 years military service was mandatory and only abolished in recent years. With most of the male population having had extensive military training, and the ending of martial law in the 80’s, a vacuum was created for some very dangerous criminals. Taiwan encountered a severe situation where organized crime members were quite often better armed and better trained than their police counterparts. To limit the necessity for military involvement a special task force was formed, dubbed the “Lightning” force as their shoulder patch displayed a lightning bolt.
The Lightning force was Taiwan’s ultra-paramilitary response to a SWAT team and specifically targeted dangerous crime organizations, or Triads. The program was so successful that the force was expanded and it’s members have been sent overseas to work as trainers and advisers to other police/military agencies. Today’s Hump Day Video shows a demonstration of some of their unorthodox close combat training.
