Hump Day Video: July 11th, 2007

It’s hard to find someone who isn’t on one of the major social networking sites nowadays. In particular, the sites Myspace and Facebook are currently the popular leaders. However, it seems that Facebook is beginning to take a good run ahead of Myspace as everyone and their uncle are creating a profile. I’m getting friend requests from people I barely remember, all the way back from elementary school!

Some of the once-popular and now-dying sites include Hi-5 and Friendster. I’ll admit to having had profiles on ALL the aforementioned sites, but Myspace and Facebook are the only ones I still use. Myspace is quickly losing its interest though and I only visit it to accept friend requests or check messages. Myspace seems to have turned into a site for meaningless self-esteem boosting with people telling each other how hot they are. Those slideshows, videos and sparkly images TAKE FUCKIN’ FOREVER TO LOAD!!! I don’t care how hot you are, if your page takes longer than 5 seconds to load I’m gonna move on and click on the next Emo profile. I am primarily using Myspace as a general networking tool for my blog and acting, while Facebook is only used for keeping in touch with “real-life” friends.

Do you have a profile on a social networking site? Are they really helpful or are we as a society losing touch with the real world and focusing too much on the cyber-world? Will Facebook turn into the cyber-meat market that myspace has become?

Here’s a hilarious Hump Day Video that cracks fun at the Facebook phenomena. It hammers the nail right on the head :)

My thoughts in general about sites such as facebook, blogs etc are that it is too easy to keep up with friends, see how they are doing, what they’ve been up to, watch their children grow through on line albums . . .Without actually ever connecting with that person. Not to say I’m not a facebooker myself… I love how I am able to drop qiuck lines to old friends without having to make elaborate plans with each of them just to touch base. I sometimes find it strange though when I connect with a friend I haven’t seen or talk to in a while and I already know everything that’s going on with them by peeking into their on line life.
“Hey Leo, how are things? how was your day?”……just kiddin;) that’s why I call!!!

I can’t stand MySpace its useless for small business and I can’t access it from work where I do most of my blogging. And the folks aka hos on it are nasty, “No I don’t want to be their friend”

As an entertainer, Myspace has its uses. Before I got my blog, it was the primary way that Battlestar Galactica fans could find me. But what started out as a brilliant social networking site has quickly turned into a shallow “cyber-dating” site.
