Was going to clean out the deep fryer today but noticed that the oil was still good and clean. So out came the batter and tiger prawns for some home-made prawn tempura. Found half an onion in the fridge too so I decided to make some onion rings.
The batter was very nice and light and the prawns were nice and big. After I defrosted the prawns I also took some time to de-shell them. Took only about 4 minutes to fry the prawn tempura, set them aside on paper towels for relax. Next up were the onions that I chopped into rings. I know I should have dipped them individually in the fryer to keep from them sticking together, but I didn’t really care about presentation as I just wanted to stuff my face.
All in all, the prawn tempura and onion rings were delicious. Took only about 20 minutes to prep and cook and were much lighter tasting and less oily than the ones I’ve had elsewhere. I need a french fry cutter so I can make my own

Looks yummy, even if the onion rings did stick together lol. Have you ever tried fried pickles? My ex introduced them to me several years back. Just take some hamburger-style sliced pickles, batter em up and fry… very good if dipped in Ranch dressing!
Darn, and I have a jar of pickles too. Now that I think of it I should have fried up some pickled banana peppers I have too.
Hmm, that sounds kind of interesting. I’ve never seen that in a restaurant around here before so I might have to look into getting a deep fryer.
Fried pickles are a southern delicacy!
Fried Pickles??.. for real?
Mmmm…onion rings. I prefer a little bit of bread crumbs when making those.
Nice work, I’ve yet to own a deep fryer. It would be the downfall of me as I would probably deep fry everything in sight. You need to deep fry some bananas and Mars bars next.
I’m still in awe that I just read a post about you deep frying onions and prawns! “Fun with the Deep Fryer” is not typically the sticky headline that would grab my attention. However, after a long night out and being slightly hungover today, your post must have called to my inner cravings for deep fried anything right now! Only Leo can write about onion rings and get away with it….thanks for the post Leo. It was deep….fried.
You know I’m here to entertain Norma, never a dull day with Leo
Looks good leo especially the tempura. I usually get make chicken wings in my deep fryer. Although lately I have been making jumbo shrimp! But I do it the easy way I buy it all frozen and just fry it up, no breading or anything like that! With the wings I use Quaker Steak and Lube sauce, which is the best I have found! But yeah I need to do some more cooking posts!
Quaker Steak and Lube? Sounds like somewhere ud take a car to get an oil change hah
I just want to say that I hate you and your crazy Chinese metabolism. If I ate like that…err, I do eat like that and that is the reason I look the way I do because I don’t think I have a metabolism.
Hey Derek – maybe you have a metabolism but it left you for Leo
It left me for someone, that’s for sure.
[...] week he had some fun with his deep frier and also takes us backstage on a new TV movie he is working [...]
I don’t know why I don’t have one of those. Sure would come in handy. Onion rings when I want em. Blissful.
I always wanted to try the fired mars bars… you gotta do it and let us know how it goes!
1) What kind of deep fryer do you have?
2) Do you recommend it?
3) Fried Zuchinni is my favorite
4) How they hell do you stay fit with a Deep Fryer in the kitchen?
